Lecture “Belgian Documentary Tradition” by Wouter Hessels + DÉJA S’ENVOLE LA FLEUR MAIGRE (1960)

This is the fifth film in “The Power of Belgian Cinema”, a series of combined lectures and screenings highlighting the accomplishments of Belgian filmmakers on an international level. Over the course of eleven evenings, eleven Belgian film scholars will visit Cinema RITCS to discuss important movements, films, filmmakers in the moving history of Belgian cinema. Each lecture is followed by a screening of a Belgian film (with English subtitles). The screening is then followed by a short Q&A with the film scholar or an invited filmmaker.

About the film
An Italian family in search of a better life comes to join the father, a miner in the Borinage (Belgium). They arrive as someone else is about to leave: Domenico, another Italian miner. After 17 years down the mine, he longs to return to his village now that there is less and less work. Poetically and expertly, Meyer films not only the misery and poverty of miners’ families but also their moments of joy: children’s first day at school, festive Sundays, games on the slag heaps…

Representative of Belgian social cinema both by its contents and its fate, the film From the Branches Drops the Withered Blossom (Déjà s’envole la fleur maigre in French, the title being inspired by a poem by Salvatore Quasimodo) is undoubtedly Paul Meyer’s crowning achievement. Undeservedly unseen for a number of decades, this film has been returned to its former glory thanks to restoration by the Royal Film Archive of Belgium.

About the speaker
Wouter Hessels has been a lecturer and researcher in film history at the RITCS since 1995. He is also the programmer for Cinema RITCS. He is a lecturer of film analysis at INSAS, the Francophone institute for film in Brussels, and regularly gives introductions and lectures at CINEMATEK, the Royal Belgian Film Archive. A polyglot, Wouter Hessels writes and performs poetry in Dutch, French, English and Italian. His life mantra is: “Long live life, love and all the arts.”

Dit is de vijfde film in de reeks “THE POWER OF BELGIAN CINEMA”, waarin telkens een klassieke Belgische film wordt voorgesteld met een Engelstalige lezing. De film wordt daarna vertoond met Engelse ondertiteling.

Een Italiaanse mijnwerker laat zijn familie overkomen naar de Borinage, hopend op een beter leven. Domenico, een andere Italiaan die al 17 jaar in de mijn werkt, denkt maar aan één ding: terugkeren naar het thuisland. Het werk in de Borinage wordt immers alsmaar schaarser. Met veel poëzie en toewijding filmt Meyer de melancholie, de miserie maar ook de vreugde van de mijnwerkersfamilies: de eerste schooldag van de kinderen, de feestelijke zondagen, spelen op de terrils…

Déjà s’envole la fleur maigre is zonder twijfel Paul Meyers meesterwerk. Zijn inhoud en parcours maken het tevens een emblematische film van de Belgische sociale cinema. De film, waarvan de titel verwijst naar een gedicht van Salvatore Quasimodo, was decennialang ten onrechte niet te zien. Dankzij de restauratie van het Koninklijk Belgisch Filmarchief heeft hij nu zijn oorspronkelijke glans teruggevonden.

C’est du cinquième film de la série « THE POWER OF BELGIAN CINEMA » (LA PUISSANCE DU CINÉMA BELGE), dans lequel un film belge classique est présenté avec une conférence en anglais. Le film sera ensuite projeté sous-titré en anglais.

Une famille italienne en quête d’une vie meilleure vient rejoindre le père, mineur dans le Borinage (Belgique). Cette arrivée est doublée d’un départ imminent, celui de Domenico, autre mineur italien, qui après 17 ans dans la mine ne pense qu’à rentrer dans son village, car le travail se fait de plus en plus rare. Meyer filme avec poésie, et avec une grande maîtrise du cadre, la mélancolie, la misère mais aussi les joies des familles de mineurs : le premier jour des enfants à l’école, les dimanches festifs, les jeux sur les terrils…

Film emblématique du cinéma social belge par son contenu et sa destinée, Déjà s’envole la fleur maigre, qui prend son titre d’un poème de Salvatore Quasimodo, est sans conteste le chef-d’œuvre de Paul Meyer. Demeuré invisible à tort pendant plusieurs décennies, ce film a retrouvé toute sa splendeur grâce à la restauration de la Cinémathèque royale de Belgique.
