De Cinéclub RITCS nam deze film mee vanaf Filmfest Gent. Voor het eerst in Brussel: HUNDREDS OF BEAVERS!

Op het onverwachte kruispunt van The Revenant, Looney Tunes, Blazing Saddles en Buster Keaton-films toont het vrolijk chaotische en eindeloos inventieve Hundreds of Beavers een alternatieve versie van het man vs. natuur-verhaal. Inclusief dodelijke ijspegels en samenzwerende bevers.

Het begon als idiote toogpraat, maar Hundreds of Beavers is het bewijs dat je zelfs zonder budget een knettergekke avonturenfilm kan maken. Met wat zakgeld, enkele vrienden in beverkostuums bij -20 °C en grenzeloze creativiteit kom je al een heel eind. De titel mag dan een natuurdocu suggereren, Mike Cheslik en Ryland Brickson Cole Tews’ passieproject is tegelijk een quirky spoof op het au sérieux survivalgenre, een kritiek op Amerikaans kolonialisme en een maffe ode aan slapstickcartoons à la Looney Tunes en Popeye. Stralend van DIY-energie en volgepompt met hilarische gags volgt dit zwart-witcuriosum een 19de-eeuwse applejackverkoper die van nul moet herbeginnen in een ondergesneeuwd landschap. Om van zero naar hero te gaan, moet hij met de hulp van een mentor-kerstman en een lokale handelaar de strijd aangaan met een opstandige bevergemeenschap die zich klaarstoomt voor wereldoverheersing.

At the unexpected crossroads of The Revenant, Looney Tunes, Blazing Saddles and Buster Keaton films, the gleefully and endlessly inventive Hundreds of Beavers presents an alternative version of the man vs nature story. Including deadly icicles and conniving beavers.

It might have started as foolish bar talk, but Hundreds of Beavers is proof that you can make a totally wacky adventure movie even when you don’t have the money for it. Some savings, a couple of friends in beaver costumes when it’s freezing -20 °C, and boundless creativity will get you a long way. Although the title suggests a nature documentary, Mike Cheslik and Ryland Brickson Cole Tews’ passion project is at once a quirky spoof on the au sérieux survival genre, a critique of American colonialism and a zany ode to slapstick cartoons like Looney Toones and Popeye. Radiant with DIY energy and packed with hilarious gags, this black-and-white curio follows a 19th-century applejack salesman who must start over from scratch in a snow-covered landscape. To go from zero to hero, he must, with the help of a mentor Santa and a local merchant, battle a vengeful beaver community gearing up for world domination.

Jean Kayak, un producteur d’applejack un peu dadais voit son domaine ruiné par des castors échauffés. Pour survivre et rencontrer l’amour, il doit se transformer en trappeur invétéré et vivre la vie sauvage.

Pour son premier long métrage presque sans parole, Mike Cheslik rend un hommage au cinéma muet et emprunte, avec une grande inventivité cartoonesque, aux codes du dessin animé et du jeu vidéo. En déroulant une succession frénétique et jubilatoire de situations gagesques, le film foisonne de leviers de mise en scène et offre à voir un artisanat de cinéma virtuose et plein d’autodérision.
