Jacques Tati’s laatste film, PARADE, was een humoristische samenkomst van kunstenaars in publiek; een poëtische ode aan de magie van mimekunst en circus. De film werd gemaakt op een miniem budgetje en geschoten op video (en daarna overgezet op 16mm).

In PARADE keert Tati terug naar zijn eerste liefde, het mimespel, waarmee hij ooit zijn carrière begon. De film speelt zich af op een avond in het circus waar Tati de gastheer is. PARADE is een briljant uitgedacht spektakel dat de grenslijnen tussen publiek en artiesten weet te vervagen, van getalenteerde acrobaten tot spelende kinderen. Hilarische beeldgrappen vloeien in elkaar over en ook Tati’s beroemde pantomime-kunsten komen rijkelijk aan bod; een waardig toneel voor Tati’s komische genie.

PARADE was Tati’s allerlaatste film. De twee die hij ervoor maakte, PLAYTIME en TRAFIC, brachten minder geld op dan ze hadden gekost, en Tati kon nergens meer nieuwe bronnen aanboren om zijn werk te financieren. De Zweedse nationale omroep bood hem een minuscuul budget en drie dagen om een film te maken; PARADE was het resultaat.

Jacques Tati’s farewell feature film, a humorous communion of audience and artists in a Music Hall: a poetic tribute to the magic of entertainment. With a tight budget, this was the first film in the history of cinema to be shot on video (then transferred to 16mm).

PARADE sees Tati’s return to the boisterous music hall world in which he began his career as a mime artist in the 1930s. Ostensibly nothing more than a series of circus acts hosted by Tati and preformed for a family audience, PARADE is in fact a brilliantly conceived spectacle which blurs all distinctions between performers and audience, accomplished acrobats and children at play. Offering gloriously funny visual gags that flow beautifully from one act to another – including several of his most famous pantomimes – PARADE is the perfect stage for Tati’s comic genius.

PARADE was Tati’s last film. His two prior films, PLAYTIME and TRAFIC, had been failures and while they had been hell to finance, he was now completely unable to find any backers for his projects. Along came Swedish television, who offered him a tiny budget and a three day shooting schedule. The result was PARADE.

L’histoire d’une grande fête au cours de laquelle Jacques Tati, en Monsieur Loyal, organise une rencontre entre spectateurs, artistes, clowns, enfants et lui-même. Le public participe directement au spectacle : une série de prodigieux numéros comiques et musicaux. Sur des échafaudages, les peintres s’improvisent à leur tour jongleurs de pinceaux, et le public ne tarde pas à les rejoindre.

Tati décide pour Parade, son dernier film, de se tourner vers la vidéo. Une technique encore balbutiante qu’il s’approprie avec inventivité. Plus légère, la vidéo lui permet de créer des effets de voltige et de dynamisme, pour un résultat magique, tout en fondus, surimpressions et travellings. Tati tient ici le rôle de Monsieur Loyal, mais précise toutefois : “Parade, ça n’a strictement rien à voir avec La Piste aux étoiles. C’est plus du music-hall que du cirque. Ce que j’ai voulu, c’est rendre la piste aux enfants.”

Dans sa dernière réalisation (une commande pour la télévision suédoise), Jacques Tati abolit la frontière de l’écran et invite le spectateur à participer à la fête. Il signe une œuvre singulière à l’atmosphère tendre et subtile.
